thomas f. o'rourke is a professor of environmental science and geography at the university of colorado. he received his b.s. in environmental science from the university of iowa and his ph.d. in geography from the university of minnesota. prior to arriving at the university of colorado, he taught at the university of idaho, columbia university, and iowa state university. tom was a guggenheim fellow, a fulbright scholar, and received the national geographic young explorer award. he has written and edited three textbooks in environmental science and two in physical geography. he has been a frequent writer for magazines, including national geographic, audubon, audubon magazine, and sierra. he received an outstanding educator award from the national council of teachers of science in 2012, and the american association for the advancement of science paul dirac award for lifetime contribution to geography in 2015.


jill k. hough is a professor of environmental studies at the university of california, davis, where she also serves as director of the institute of the environment and sustainability. a former faculty member of the department of earth and planetary sciences at ucla, she received her b.s. in geography and environmental studies from penn state, and her ph.d. in geography from ucla. jill has taught geography courses in the united states, europe, and asia, and she has also worked as a consultant for the national park service and the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. jill was appointed a smithsonian fellow in 2012 and an american association for the advancement of science fellow in 2013. she served as chair of the association of american geographers division of human geography and chair of the association's western section. she is the editor of several books including geographies of china, geographies of asia, and geographies of climate change.
